Literature
Taichi Sword Yu Nancheng's work concerns the actualization of Chinese philosophical principles. Taichi Sword, from the China Red series, depicts over a thousand red figures doing Tai Chi simultaneously in Tiananmen Square. The location was chosen for three reasons: as an iconic symbol of Chinese architecture, for its topographical placement as the 'gateway' to the forbidden city, and as a sight of significant historical importance. This painting has deep visual dualisms between the figure and the background that can be disorienting. Bright red, thick, textured, almost three-dimensional forms contrast the black, flat surface of the paper. Yu Nancheng intends for the viewer's movement through and acclimation with these visual dualities to lead them to an emotionally balanced relationship with the work. Here the artist creates a work that visually embodies the philosophical principles of Taoism from which Tai Chi is derived.
