Literature
Siew Hock Meng was born in Malaysia and came to Singapore to be enrolled in the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). After a year, he found himself more interested in aesthetics and art philosophy than in merely learning how to paint. He thus returned to Malaysia in 1961 to a vocation of rubber tapping, which afforded him the time to read. On his return to Singapore in 1975, he ran an art gallery and did portraiture for which he gained recognition. Singapore River Scene was painted in the early stage of his artistic career as one of the artist’s rare watercolour works, since he predominantly works with pastel and oils. The scene that is captured by the artist is one of transition – a Singapore caught between tradition and urban progress.
